| Summary, etc. | La société moderne a longtemps entretenu un rapport plus serein au passé qu’à l’avenir. Le récit du passé qui s’accumule dans les livres n’est-il pas cette chose inerte destinée à éclairer le présent ? Pourtant, litiges et controverses quant aux « vérités » que l’histoire prétend fonder ébranlent les certitudes. L’une des conséquences de l’impuissance de l’histoire à asseoir ce qui serait une certaine vérité du passé, c’est d’attirer à elle ceux qui voudraient s’y inscrire rétroactivement en invoquant les injustices mémorielles dont ils auraient été victimes. Si l’histoire s’ouvre ainsi à tout venant, c’est que la société elle-même n’est plus certaine de son identité non plus que du parcours qui l’a conduite jusqu’à elle-même. Dans les sociétés contemporaines où s’achève cet éclatement de la référence collective, on observe ainsi l’encombrement des acteurs se précipitant au cœur de l’histoire espérant y inscrire la mémoire de leur propre parcours. |
