Summary, etc. Der gesellschaftstheoretisch fundierte Risikobegriff geht von der Annahme aus, dass »Risiko« zu der Klasse von Problemen der modernen Gesellschaft gehört, die »quer« zu deren Funktionssystemen steht: Risiken können danach nicht auf ein spezielles Funktionssystem (Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft oder Politik etwa) konzentriert werden, sie sind strukturell mit dem System der modernen Gesellschaft verbunden. Wie in dem vorliegenden, auf die systemtheoretische Risikoforschung fokussierenden Band dargelegt wird, beziehen sich Forschungsprobleme wesentlich auf Verständigungschancen zwischen Entscheidern und Betroffenen, auf die »Rationalisierbarkeit« riskanter Entscheidungen und auf die Bedeutung nicht auflösbaren Nichtwissens. Im ökologischen Kontext kulminieren diese Aspekte zum unlösbaren Problem der »Selbstgefährdung der Gesellschaft«.
